Sail by the Stars, a far fetch name for a one man’s band. Josh is the man that plays it all. The first time I ever hear him play it’s like...... jaw dropping. The songs is so well done and compelling that I can’t wait to book him straight away and ask for an interview session. For a person without any guidance to create some recording that’s sound like a pro at his age is just a rare find. He is one of the most exciting artist I have ever met here. And here are our conversation.
Hey Josh, It’s great to meet you finally. Your music are fantastic.
Q:So tell us something about you first. How and when you started and when you formed? You literally sound like a pro now.
A: Well, i've been playing guitar since i was 9, and singing since i was born. I've been playing in bands since i was 13. This project was officially formed in April of this year, basically out of frustration from not being able to find the right people. I typically played guitar and/or sang in these bands. Somewhere a long the way i picked up all of the other instruments, and just started really practicing them.
Q:What inspire you to actually get into the music business? Any singer or producer that you admire?
A: To be completely honest? My father. He's been playing guitar since he was a teenager, and because of that i grew up around bands/music. there are pictures of me barely crawling trying to play his guitar. I look up to him so much, and he's a tremendous player. He's always supported me and pushed me to be a better musician, writer, and person.
Q:What is your source of inspiration when you are trying to write a song or lyrics? And how you start with it? Lyrics first? Story first or just a string of notes that you can’t seem to get out of your head for 10 months?
A: My writing process typically starts as a guitar riff. I typically work on a skeleton of the song first, the chord progression and stuff on acoustic guitar. then i slowly start to work in melodies and hooks. the other instruments i start writing in my head, and the last step to the process is are the lyrics. The hardest part for me to write would be the 2nd verse of a song, for whatever reason, it almost always comes out last. and it takes a while. As far as inspiration, this record was primarily influenced by my relationship with my girlfriend/move to florida.
Q: Why Rock? And not pop or indie?
A: I grew up listening to 90s pop/rock. you know, third eye blind, goo goo dolls, etc. i just love making music that anyone can sing along and dance to.
Q:So a CD is coming. Is it an EP or a full length 12 tracks recording?
A: It's a 5 song E.P., due out November 4th. it's entitled "A Sunshine State of Mind" and will be available on http://www.smartpunk.com/ and iTunes.
Q, what are you expecting in your near future? a record deal? or just tour or are you looking for a management team at the moment?
A: The future. The great unkown. In a perfect world, i would pick up a management team, a booking agent, and a record label, and hit the road. Record a full length and tour on that. However, there are many uncertainties in that, and i just have to trust that God will lead me in the right direction.
Q:should we be expecting any tour, or appearance on any show in the near future?
A: I am REALLY looking forward to going on tour soon. It's been a while since i've played a full band show live, and i'm getting itchy to hit the stage soon!
Q:If someone wish to contact you to book for a show or appearance who should they contact you or how they can get hold of you?
A: My booking e-mail address is sailbythestars@gmail.com
Q:You’re a one man show at the moment, are you looking for any band mate?
A: Yes, i am always looking to find people to consider playing with. I want to hit the road soon!
Q: Let’s get personal. Any girlfriend? What kinda girl are you looking for?
A:Yes! I am in love with the girl of my dreams!!! Her name is Jenn. We actually just moved in together a few months ago, and i couldn't be happier. I moved down here to Orlando, Florida from Omaha, Nebraska, to be with her.
Thanks again for letting out your time for an interview Josh. I wish you great success in the very near future and I hope by then we can have another meeting in a bar and drinkm face to face to your success!!! All the Best.
And there you have it. I hope all of you have enjoyed it as much as I’m doing it. and if you are interested in hearing his creation. You may look for him at http://www.myspace.com/sailbythestars
